We all know how limited time is in the classroom. There is never enough time to fit everything in! Some days, I read the book of the day while my kids are packing up to go home. However, most of the time I read as a part of their mini lesson. I use the book as a mentor text, or I ask STAAR like questions in regards to the book. You could use it as a brain break in between activities or as a "morning meeting" tool to stir conversation. No matter how you use it, the kids will be happy you're reading to them!
While I'm lesson planning, I pick out the books I want to read for the following week. Sometimes I pick books that correlate with our reading lesson, sometimes I pick books that relate to our writing lesson, sometimes I pick books that go with what we're learning in social studies, sometimes I pick books based on my students' behavior/relationships in class, and sometimes I pick books simply because I like them! Do whatever works for you. Let me tell you, when you start this, your kids won't let you stop! My students are constantly asking when I'm going to read the picture book of the day, what it is, and if I'll let them read it to the class. I google all of the books I read and copy their cover into a word document. I send those over to my sweet secretary, and she prints them out in color for me. My wonderful paras have them laminated, and I staple them to a bulletin board after I read them to the class!
